Main Ritual- The Naga Sadhu in the various akhara of the Kumbh Mela initiates the bathing ritual during the various snans of Kumbh Mela.

There are thirteen Akhara which participates in Kumbh Mela and their ceremony is a treat to watch. Darshan of the Naga Sadhus is an important part of the Kumbh Mela. During the festival people can visit akhada and speak to sadhus and have blissful conversations with them.

It is truly a religious festival and people can listen to kathas and participate in Kirtans, Ganga Sabha and the Uttarakhand government installs loudspeakers and plays Ganga ji aarti which can then be heard in different parts of the town and it makes a truly wonderful atmosphere.

During the festival, all the temples are worth visiting. We believe this kumbh government would lay special emphasis on yoga during Kumbh as India is yoga hub in this century.

The Story

In ancient Vedic scriptures it is mentioned that the during Churning of the ocean, there was a fight between the Gods and demons for the Kumbh, a pot of Elixir (Amrit, drink of immortality), which emerged during the churning of Ocean. Gods managed to take the pot and flew away from the battlefield, then Asuras (demons) started chasing them, during the chase, some drops of Elixir (Amrit, drink of immortality) spilled from the Kumbh pot to four places/rivers, presently where Kumbh Mela is held.

The Kumbh mela is celebrated at the four places as a mark of immortality reaching mankind. Since millennia, devotees have been taking bath in Ganga, Shipra, Godavari — the Kumbh rivers — hoping to gain freedom from the clutch of death. Of these four places, one is in Haridwar, Har Ki Pauri, Uttarakhand.
